St. Louis County officials are making a push to make sure senior homeowners don’t miss out on applying for a property tax freeze that could offer some financial relief. The deadline to apply is June 30th, and the program is available to residents age 62 or older. This program will lock in property tax rates at their current levels, which is something that is attractive considering the rising home assessments we are seeing now. There have been some recent concerns over the latest property reassessments, which have shown increased home values. County Councilman Dennis Hancock wants to put an emphasis that these changes will not affect the tax bills of those enrolled in the freeze. Alternatively, the county will calculate a credit based on the difference between what seniors would owe without the freeze and what they paid last year. To make the process more convenient, the county is offering extended hours and weekend options. Seniors can apply in person Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Clayton headquarters or satellite offices in St. Ann, Chesterfield, and South County. Saturday hours will also be available at select locations on June 14, 21, and 28. This tax freeze can help seniors avoid rising property taxes and keep costs stable, making it a good tool for those on fixed incomes. With the deadline fast approaching, officials urge eligible homeowners to apply soon to secure this financial relief. For more information such as address to apply, or to apply online, Click Here
